Australia National Plastics Plan Drives Surge in AS-Certified Corn Starch Compostable Tableware
Sydney, June 22, 2026 — Australia’s National Plastics Plan 2021 continues to reshape the country’s foodservice industry with strict nationwide bans on single-use plastic cutlery, plastic bowls and polystyrene foam containers. All Australian states have enforced phased plastic restrictions, requiring local restaurants, takeaway shops and catering companies to fully switch to certified compostable tableware.
A key policy update took effect on March 1, 2026, when Australia officially canceled the exemption for international compostable certifications. Only products certified with local AS4736 industrial compost standards or AS5810 home compost standards are now legally permitted for commercial use, greatly raising the market threshold for imported eco-tableware.
According to data from the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA), PFAS-free corn starch tableware has become the most popular alternative, accounting for 61% of all compliant compostable tableware imports in the first half of 2026. Compared with paper, wood and bagasse tableware, corn starch products offer better high-temperature resistance, stronger oil and water proof performance, and stable structure for daily takeaway and hot food service.
Fully biodegradable and microplastic-free, certified corn starch tableware fits perfectly with Australia’s municipal green waste composting system. More Australian catering chains and local cafes have completed product upgrades to meet national environmental requirements. Businesses using uncertified disposable tableware will face fines of up to AUD 3,000. With the 2027 national EPR packaging policy upcoming, the demand for standard-compliant corn starch compostable tableware will maintain steady growth across Australia.
