Indonesia’s nationwide single-use plastic restriction drives rapid growth of corn starch biodegradable disposable tableware market. Corn starch tableware fully decomposes without microplastics, matching the country’s marine plastic reduction target. Domestic orders of eco tableware surge sharply, while the government rolls out supportive industrial policies.
Fueled by Indonesia’s nationwide single-use plastic ban, booming food delivery business and growing environmental awareness, corn starch biodegradable disposable tableware has become the fastest-growing eco-packaging product across the country.
To curb plastic pollution, Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry issued strict plastic restriction policies in 2026. More than 100 major cities including Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya and Bandung have banned plastic cutlery, foam containers and thin plastic bags in catering and public venues. Non-compliant businesses face fines from IDR 5 million to IDR 25 million, creating huge market demand for plant-based disposable tableware.
Made of corn starch compounded with PLA and PBAT materials, the eco-friendly tableware features high temperature resistance, non-toxicity and full industrial compostability. It completely decomposes within 180 days without producing microplastics, strongly supporting Indonesia’s national target of cutting marine plastic waste by 70% before 2030.
Industry data shows Indonesia’s corn starch packaging market will grow steadily at a CAGR of 12.8%, rising from USD 14.2 billion in 2025 to USD 29.6 billion by 2031. Disposable tableware accounts for nearly 40% of the total market consumption. Major food delivery platforms, fast-food chains and tourism catering services have massively adopted corn starch tableware to meet local regulations and ESG standards.
Local manufacturers report explosive order growth of up to 110% year-on-year, with many factories expanding production lines to satisfy domestic demand and neighboring export orders. The Indonesian government is also formulating unified national standards for starch-based tableware and preparing tax incentives to support the biodegradable industry.
Although higher product prices and incomplete waste sorting infrastructure remain short-term challenges, continuous technological upgrades are effectively reducing production costs. By 2027–2030, corn starch tableware is expected to occupy over 60% of Indonesia’s biodegradable tableware market, becoming the mainstream sustainable option for the local catering industry.
