DUBAI, UAE — As the United Arab Emirates enforces its nationwide single‑use plastic ban starting January 1, 2026, foodservice operators across the Gulf region are rapidly switching to corn starch‑based tableware to comply with the new rules. The ban covers plastic cups, lids, cutlery, plates, straws, and takeaway containers, pushing businesses toward certified biodegradable alternatives.
Corn starch products, which meet European standard EN 13432 and U.S. ASTM D6400 compostability requirements, have become the preferred choice for many restaurants, hotels, and catering companies in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. Unlike conventional plastics, corn starch tableware breaks down into CO₂, water, and organic matter within 90 to 180 days in industrial composting systems, leaving no toxic residues.
“The 2026 UAE plastic ban is a game‑changer for our industry,” said a spokesperson at YKO Packaging, a Dubai‑based sustainable packaging supplier. “Since late 2025, we’ve seen a more than 200% increase in orders for corn starch bowls, trays, and cutlery. Customers want safe, heat‑resistant, and cost‑competitive solutions that meet both local regulations and international food safety standards.”
The shift is not limited to the Middle East. Major international chains including McDonald’s and Starbucks have begun introducing corn starch cutlery and straws in select European, Middle Eastern, and African markets as part of their global plastic reduction commitments. Airlines such as Emirates have also adopted compostable corn starch utensils on board to align with zero‑waste goals.
